Choosing the Right Campsite

The best campsites usually balance sunlight, shade, airflow, and ground conditions.

Morning sunlight can help dry condensation and warm the camp early. Partial afternoon shade helps prevent overheating. Natural windbreaks like tree lines or terrain features reduce temperature swings and improve shelter comfort.

Ground color and material also matter. Dark rocks retain heat longer into the evening, which may help in cooler weather. Light sandy areas reflect more sunlight and can feel harsher during midday heat.

Experienced outdoorsmen often pay attention to these subtle details before setting camp.

Shelter and Tarp Placement

The albedo effect directly affects how shelters perform outdoors.

A dark tarp placed in open sunlight absorbs significant heat during the day. In colder weather, that can be helpful. In hot climates, it can quickly turn a shelter into an oven.

Reflective tarps or shelters with reflective interiors behave differently. They can bounce radiant heat away during daytime exposure while also reflecting fire heat inward at night if positioned correctly.
